What is Vitamin B12?

A water-soluble B vitamin also known as cobalamin, is an essential vitamin that your body needs but cannot produce. It’s found naturally in animal products but also added to certain foods and available as an oral supplement or injection. It helps keep your body’s blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all of your cells. Vitamin B12 also helps prevent megaloblastic anemia, a blood condition that makes people tired and weak.

Health Benefits

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in helping your body produce red blood cells.

Adequate vitamin B12 levels are crucial to a healthy pregnancy and prevent major birth defects.

Support bone health and prevent osteoporosis.

Vitamin B12 is involved in energy production in the body.

Why is Vitamin B12 important?

During digestion, the hydrochloric acid in your stomach releases B12 from food, allowing the body to absorb it. In some people, a condition called pernicious anemia can hinder the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract, resulting in a vitamin B12 shortfall.
